Hanley Center Step Study: A Resource for Recovery

At various times throughout the year, patients and alumni of the Center for Men’s Recovery come together for the Hanley Step Study, a discussion group in which patients and alumni share their experience and learn about the first four steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.

During this week-long event, participants meet daily from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. to discuss the first 71 pages of the Alcoholics Anonymous textbook. Each chapter discussion is led by a staff member, local member of Alcoholics Anonymous, or a Hanley Alumnus.

What is Step Study?
The Step Study enhances the Hanley residential treatment experience by providing an intimate, working knowledge of the fellowship of 12-Step programs by
  • Exploring the mechanical “how to” of Steps 1 through 4
  • Learning about the culture of 12-Step programs
  • Clarifying the difference between the all-inclusive language of the Alcoholics Anonymous textbook versus the sometimes confusing rhetoric heard at meetings

Throughout Step Study, men are able to hear and share the honest doubts and confusion that arise when defining “powerlessness” or “God as we understood Him.” Afterwards, they have a better personal understanding of these phrases and how they came to be a part of Alcoholics Anonymous.

By working closely with other men seeking recovery, participants form a strong bond that helps ensure a solid foundation for the road to sobriety.
