Clinical Skills (45 CEU’s)  (Practice Dimension)

Course Description
This course introduces participants to screening and assessment instruments, procedures and techniques related to the clinical evaluation of clients. Addictions, developmental issues, readiness and motivation for treatment, detoxification protocols, and client matching
to services available are covered.   Additionally, stages of addiction, diagnosis criteria, and
co-occurring disorders are addressed.  An introduction to treatment planning and referral services are included. Basic counseling skills will be introduced.

Course Outcomes
At the completion of this course, you should be able to

1. Explain evidenced based screening and assessment instruments
2. Explain procedures and techniques related to evaluating individuals with addictions.
3. Describe developmental issues and ways to increase individuals motivation for treatment.
4. Demonstrate basic counseling skills
5. Explain stages of addiction.
6. Describe the diagnostic criteria related to mental health and addictions. 
7. Describe the components of a treatment plan.
8. Identify the process of referral services.

Course Format
Participants will be involved in lectures, small group discussions, and small group activities.

4. Stages of addiction.

Session II (15 CEU’s)
In class topics:
1. Motivation interviewing
2. Developmental issues
3. Basic counseling skills

Session III (15 CEU’s)
In class topics:
1. Diagnosing
2. Treatment planning
3. Referral
