Ethics (30 CEU’s) (Practice Dimensions)

Course Description
This course introduces participants to ethical decision making and code of ethics in the addiction
counseling field. Other topics covered include privacy, confidentiality, HIPPA, laws, rules, and regulations. Additionally, dual relationships, boundaries, transference, and sexual misconduct will be addressed. Policies associated with human services, computer ethics, and
cultural competence will be introduced.
Course Outcomes
At the completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Explain privacy, confidentiality, and HIPPA guidelines
2. Discuss laws, rules, and regulations associated with addiction counseling
3. Identify the process of ethical decision making
4. Identify code of ethics related to the addictions field
5. Describe transference, dual relationships, and sexual misconduct
6. Discuss the ethics of computer usage in the field of counseling
7. Explain policies in human services related to cultural competence
Course Format
Participants will be involved in lectures, small group discussions, and small group activities
