Psychopharmacology (45 CEU’s) (Practice Dimensions and Elective)

Course Description
This course examines the role of psychiatric medications (licit) and illicit drugs of abuse. Topics include functional neuroanatomy, signs and symptoms, withdrawal, tolerance, neuroscience, contraindications, indications, various treatment protocols. Additionally, treatment planning and service coordination will be introduced.
Course Outcomes
At the completions of this course you should be able to:
1. Explain terminology associated with the neurosciences.
2. Identify components of the brain and nervous systems
3. Identify and explain the effects of substances of abuse on the human anatomy
4. Explain the signs, symptoms, withdrawal, and tolerance of the various substances of abuse
5. Explain evidence based treatment protocols associated with substances of abuse
6. Discuss case management and advocacy for individuals abusing substances
7. Explain the role of consultation in the field of addiction counseling
8. Explain evidenced based treatment planning for individuals abusing substances
Course Format
Participants will be involved in lectures, small groups discussions, and small group activities.
