Understanding Addiction  (45 CEU’s)   (Transdisciplinary Foundation)

Course Description
This course introduces participants to the disease concept of addiction along with
signs, symptoms, and the progression of the disease.  In addition, physical aspects of addiction and the neurobiology basis of substance abuse are introduced.  Co-occurring
disorders and other substances and addictions are addressed.  The history of addiction including etiology and causation are explored.

Course Outcomes
At the completion of this course you should be able to:

1. Identify signs and symptoms of addiction.
2. Explain the progression of the disease of addiction.
3. Identify physical aspects of addiction.
4. Explain and identify co-occurring disorders.
5. Explain the history of addiction and addiction treatment .
6. Identify the various etiological and causative factors of addiction.

Course Format
Participants will be involved in lectures, small groups discussion, and small group activities.

Session I (15 CEU’s)
In class topics:
1. History of Addiction
2. Etiology and causation of addiction
3. Models of treatment
4. Involvement of treatment of family
5. Use of Support Groups

Session II (15 CEU’s)
In class topics:
1. Signs and symptoms
2. Physical aspects
3. Disease concept
4. Other substances and behaviors of abuse
5. Involvement of treatment of family

Session III (15 CEU’s)
In class topics:
1. Signs and symptoms
2. Co-occurring disorders
3. History of addiction
4. Etiology and causation
5. Use of support groups
