Treatment Methodologies

After the psychological evaluation, each patient then develops a plan of care that establishes goals and treatment methods related to the problems identified in the assessment process.
Based on a patient’s assessment results, our staff will provide specialized therapy for an array of issues, including
- Trauma
- ADHD
- Cognitive impairment
- Eating disorders
- Mood disorders
- Anxiety disorders
- Personality disorders
A therapist will then meet once a week with the patient for individual therapy. Patients are usually assigned a therapist of the same sex. To address a patient’s issues, we use evidence-based interventions such as
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
- Motivational Interviewing
- Solution-Focused Therapy
Each patient will also meet for dual-focus group therapy (to discuss dual, or co-occurring, diagnoses) once a week.
The psychology staff also participates in lectures throughout a patient’s stay, providing information on topics such as effective coping skills and how to replace negative thinking for recovery-oriented thinking. In addition, a member of the psychology team facilitates the art therapy/creative healing session each week.
For patients who need or request additional psychology services, we will develop an aftercare plan that emphasizes emotional recovery after treatment.
Types of Psychotherapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is based on the idea that our thoughts – not people, events or situations – cause our feelings and behaviors.
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy
A type of CBT, suggests that by changing irrational thoughts into thoughts that are more reasonable, you can change harmful or self-destructive behavior and improve the way you feel, even if external circumstances do not change.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Another type of CBT, emphasizes social skills training, self- awareness, and meditative exercises to help you develop effective coping skills for dealing with your addiction and co-occurring disorder after treatment.
Motivational Interviewing
The goal of motivational interviewing is to help you change your self-destructive behavior of substance abuse by increasing your awareness of the problems caused by your addiction, the consequences of your alcohol or drug abuse, and the improved quality of life you can have through sobriety.
Solution-Focused Therapy
This approach focuses on what you want to achieve through your addiction treatment at Hanley Center rather than what brought you here in the first place. Solution-focused therapy emphasizes the present and future rather than the past.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) Therapy
This therapy uses rapid eye movements or tactile stimulation to facilitate the process of recalling the memory of a traumatic event and releasing your emotions. Doing so helps to free your mind and body of the harmful physiological effects of these memories.
