Aging to Perfection: Preventing Late Onset Substance Abuse


Aging to Perfection is a 3-session interactive program designed to prevent late onset substance abuse problems and to strengthen healthy behaviors in older adults.

The program empowers individuals, families and communities to take action by helping older adults develop problem-solving skills and the ability to manage difficult situations.

Programs take place in a variety of settings including retirement communities, schools, community centers and religious facilities.


Program sessions include discussions on:


  • The differences between normal aging and possible medical problems
  • Changes with aging that affect behaviors
  • Minimizing unhealthy behaviors
  • Safe medication practices
  • Ways to engage physicians to protect one's health



Aging to Perfection teaches participants to:

  • Distinguish factors that place adults at risk for alcohol and prescription medicine abuse and misuse
  • Discover factors that protect adults from high-risk behavior
  • Examine personal standards of alcohol and prescription use
  • Understand the need for standards as protectors
  • Identify protectors that improve lifestyles
  • Recognize and express feelings appropriately
  • Understand the value of continuing rituals and traditions
