8th Grade: PowerLines

copyright Hazelden Foundation

With PowerLines, 8th grade students participate in an 8-session interactive program designed to reinforce the messages and behaviors learned in 6th and 7th grades:

  • Identifying goals, alcohol use alternatives, and consequences of alcohol use
  • Understanding and identifying community and teenage community alcohol influences
  • Identifying influences, outcomes, perspectives, and responsibilities involved in youth drinking and driving
  • Identifying and discussing effective ways communities help prevent teens from drinking alcohol
  • Identifying community and individual responsibilities, consequences, and influences on teens
  • Preparation and presentation of PowerLines community projects

The program also introduces students to “power” groups that influence adolescent alcohol use and availability within their communities and encourage community action and citizen participation skills.

Student projects also give 8th graders opportunities to become positive influences within their communities, schools, and peer groups, and with younger students.

The final component of PowerLines provides an opportunity for students to conduct a “town meeting” in which small groups of students represent various community groups and make recommendations for community action for alcohol use prevention.
