Commonly Abused Drugs among Men

Men and women abuse drugs differently and have different reactions to alcohol and drugs. According to the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration, men are twice as likely as women to be alcoholic, more likely to be drug dependent, and relapse at a greater rate.

Whereas women tend to use drugs to cope with stress, men are more likely to use drugs to socialize. This may explain why men are more apt to abuse illicit drugs than are women. Commonly abused drugs for men would include:

  • Alcohol
  • Prescription Medication
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Over the counter (OTC) sleep aids, cough syrups, etc.
  • Opiates (Oxycontin, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Methadone, etc.)
  • Marijuana
  • Hallucinogens (LSD, Psilocybin, Ecstasy, Dextromethorphan)
  • Heroin
  • Cocaine / Crack
  • Stimulants
  • Inhalants
  • Methamphetamine
  • Designer Drugs
