In addition, you will also participate in experiential activities, such as trust walks, ropes course and teambuilding exercises. Experiential activities present a problem or obstacle that will challenge you physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. They require teamwork and trust to be completed successfully, and they result in feelings of pride and accomplishment.
You will participate in these experiential exercises with others from your recovery unit. The primary objective of the activities is to break down the walls of isolation that are typical in addicts and help you learn to work as a team and trust each other. The skills you will learn from the experiential activities are an integral part of your recovery journey and will ultimately prepare you for bigger challenges found in the everyday world. You will form strong, lasting bonds with those on your unit, as well.
Experiential Activities
Trust Walk
Trust-building activities, such as the trust walk, help develop communication and cooperation skills, as well as mutual respect, openness, understanding, and empathy. During this activity, you are partnered with another person from your unit; one person is blindfolded while the other leads them on a walk around campus. At the end of the walk, you will process your feelings as you explore what it meant to be a leader or a follower.
Ropes Course
The ropes course is the ultimate challenge, requiring both an immense amount of teamwork and trust. You and your team members will be transported to a local camp for the day, where your cooperation, collaboration, and trust skills will be put to the test.
Throughout the ropes course, you must rely on your teammates to help you navigate a set of obstacles. By doing so, you will discover how working with others collaboratively can help you overcome your personal challenges and achieve more than you can individually. As you push your own perceived limits, you will learn about taking risks, how you perform under pressure, and how you give and receive support from other people.
