Wellness & Recreation

At Hanley Center, wellness and recreational activities are designed to help patients achieve renewed physical, spiritual and mental health during early recovery from addiction. Our lush, tropical campus offers year-round access to outdoor recreation and exercise.

The Hanley Wellness Center is supervised by a certified therapeutic recreation specialist who has extensive experience within addiction treatment settings. She will guide you in a customized wellness plan and help you achieve physical strength and agility as well as a sense of self-trust and confidence. You will experience fun, challenges, camaraderie and achievement, all accomplished through challenge-by-choice activities.

Patients have regularly scheduled time for various fitness and recreational activities.  The goal is to allow them to incorporate physical exercise into their recovery program, practice mind-body techniques, or learn wellness skills that they can carry with them in their recovery.

At every age, fitness and physical health level, there are wellness activities that are right for each patient:

  • Aqua wellness groups are designed for pain relief and management.
  • Regaining balance is one of the most important aspects of physical recovery for many older adults. A daily exercise class that teaches and promotes stretching, balance and flexibility is a favorite staple of the Wellness and Recreation program at Hanley Center.
  • Leisure Education Classes teach patients how to relate the benefits of exercise to the benefits of recovery.
  • Experiential Therapy teaches patients how to plan, problem solve and work with peers while trusting the process, each other and, ultimately, themselves.
  • Therapeutic off-site outings include trips to the beach, movies, museums, parks or zoos as patients regain stability. The ropes course and other team-building exercises serve to build self-esteem and confidence while engendering camaraderie, trust and synergy within the group.
  • Hanley Center brings in highly respected physical and occupational therapists as well as speech therapists to help patients who need these services return to a sound physical functioning.
