Letter from the CEO Dr. Barbara Krantz

When Hanley Center was founded 25 years ago, Jack and Mary Jane Hanley hoped it would become a life-saving community resource, and in time expand to other communities to help as many people afflicted by drug or alcohol addiction as possible. On May 11, Hanley Center’s board of directors made a historic decision to be acquired by Caron Treatment Centers, fulfilling the Hanley’s original mission in the most exciting and promising way.
There are many shared clinical philosophies between the two organizations, so a blending of our cultures and programs is expected to be rewarding and productive on many levels. Caron is very well known for their superb young adult programs, while Hanley is nationally recognized for its expertise with boomers and older adults. Hanley Center will now be able to accelerate its plan to expand the West Palm Beach campus and add a residential young adult program, while Caron will be able to assimilate Hanley’s older adult program experience.
The united organization will offer an unmatched continuum of care, and significantly improve treatment accessibility and number of beds in the markets served by both treatment centers. The acquisition will take effect in early 2012 and will create the second largest addiction treatment organization in the country, and the largest when measured by treatment capacity (beds) alone. Officially, Hanley Center will become an affiliated company of Caron Treatment Centers, but for the foreseeable future both entities will retain their respective names.
Doug Tieman, president and chief executive officer of Caron, will serve as the united organization’s chief executive officer; I will transition full time into my other role as chief medical officer and medical research director at the Hanley Center in Florida. The Hanley Center Foundation will support both Hanley Center and Caron Treatment Centers in all charitable endeavors in Florida. Dr. Rachel Docekal will continue in her role as chief executive officer of the Hanley Center Foundation.
This union not only increases and solidifies the reach and capabilities of both organizations, but positively affects the addiction treatment industry around the nation. Doug and his talented team at Caron join me in celebrating this important step that will bring even greater help and more hope to those touched by the disease of addiction.
