3 Must-Ask Questions When Considering a Facility That’s Right for Your Loved One

Oct 26, 2020

Congratulations! Your loved one has made the courageous decision to seek help for addiction. Because each program is unique, there are many factors to consider when deciding if a treatment program is right for you. While this can be overwhelming, it is important to remember to ask questions when you talk to admissions. Today let’s look at three must-ask questions when considering an addiction treatment facility.

Does the program have a proven history of success?

In health care, measuring success is critical. To ensure that a treatment program is effective, it is essential that the facility use proven, evidence-based practices. Measurement-based care (MBC) measures how patients respond to techniques used during treatment. With each test, the patient to assess how they are progressing and to see, with clear data, their change over time. MBC programs also allow the clinical and medical teams to understand how patients are responding and how to best meet their needs. Combined with outcomes studies, MBC can improve the overall experience of each patient.

Outcomes studies clearly show whether or not a treatment program works. Conducted by third party companies, these studies assess how patients improved (or didn’t improve) following their treatment. Published studies can also indicate whether the program has a positive success rate in comparison to competitors. Look for programs that collect outcomes data and ask them to show you the results. This can be a very telling exercise, so be sure to ask for the data. You can learn more about Hanley’ success rates.

Does the program offer long-term alumni support?

Recovery truly begins the minute you leave treatment, and a strong alumni program can help you succeed. Alumni communities create fellowship through alumni events, recovery meetings, and ongoing services. This network allows alum to support, guide, and inspire each other for a lifetime. Smartphone apps, such as the “Hanley Connect” app, create a digital space where alumni can share openly. When leaving treatment, these valuable resources help in supporting each alumnus through continuing care and beyond.

Also, search for programs with a dedicated alumni team. For instance, at an Hanley treatment center, each patient is assigned an Alumni Care Coordinator. From the early days of detox, these Alumni Care Coordinators form lasting bonds with each patient. These professionals also call each patient within 24 hours of leaving treatment, assuring that they have the support they need. When looking for treatment, ask if your loved one will have a personal Alumni Care Coordinator who offers a lifetime of support.

What accreditations does the program hold?

Treatment centers that are awarded state licensing and quality assurance accreditations meet the highest standards of care. Treatment facilities that strive for these certifications are specifically designed to deliver evidence-based services consistent with established national guidelines.

Credentials and licenses, such as CARF or ASAM, indicate if the treatment facility meets nationally recognized standards. Treatment programs, such as Hanley, are accredited to provide treatment at the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s (ASAM) certification level of 3.5 or 3.7. The 3.5 and 3.7 ASAM Criteria levels include 24-hour nursing and medical care, as well as counseling services for serious problems, including:

  • An individual’s past and current experiences of substance use and withdrawal
  • Their health history and current physical condition
  • Their thoughts, emotions, and mental health issues
