Benefits of Mental Health IOP

May 5, 2023

Living with untreated depression, anxiety, or trauma can make every day feel overwhelming. When attempts to manage your mental health with medication and regular counseling still fall short, a mental health Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) may be able to provide relief. Let’s look at how the therapeutic techniques and setting of a mental health IOP can benefit anyone suffering from one or more mental health disorders.

If you or a loved one need help, call our admissions team today at 561-841-1033.

Hanley Center, a premier place for mental health care resources in Florida, is opening a new mental health IOP in West Palm Beach. To help people transition back to their daily lives, our highly trained team will evaluate each patient, affirm or update a diagnosis, and create personalized treatment plans for total recovery and a newfound sense of self-worth, direction, and control. Using cutting-edge therapies, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Hanley Center Counseling’s Mental Health IOP is a great step down from a residential mental health stay to help transition you back into the community. If you’re looking for a place to find hope, healing, and transformation for you or a loved one, contact Hanley Center Counseling today.

What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program for Mental Health?

An Intensive Outpatient Program for mental health is a treatment option for individuals who require more than traditional outpatient therapy but do not need to stay in a hospital or residential facility or can be a great step down after a mental health residential stay. A mental health IOP involves a multifaceted approach to therapy that provides intensive individual and group counseling, medication management, and various other interventions to promote mental wellness. While structured, it is flexible enough to meet each person’s individual needs as they work to improve their well-being and regain control of their lives.

What Are the Primary Benefits of a Mental Health IOP?

Taking part in a mental health IOP has numerous benefits, but we can identify a few of the most common ones. These benefits include access to individualized treatment plans, group therapy sessions, and psychiatric medication management. They’re also flexible, allowing you to continue working or attending school while prioritizing your mental health. Most importantly, a mental health IOP can offer a supportive environment where individuals can share their experiences and feel understood by others who are going through similar struggles.

Potential Outcome of Unmet Mental Health Needs

Neglecting mental health needs can have devastating consequences. Ignoring the symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression can put you on a dangerous path. You may have already experienced it yourself as you struggle with relationships, face difficulties at work, and find it hard to handle daily activities. Even completing a residential mental health program with no continuing care can undermine your work to live a healthier life. Focusing on your need for care and healing can help you avoid the risks of substance use, self-harm, suicide, and other self-destructive choices tied to feelings of hopelessness and despair.

Flexibility for Stabilizing and Healing in Florida

The new IOP for mental health at Hanley Center Counseling is characterized by our Executive Director, Deb Kuzmin, LCSW, as being designed “For individuals transitioning out of residential care for mental health disorders or for those who are seeking mental health care for the first time.” She emphasizes a key value of our IOP as “providing the flexibility they need to stabilize and heal as they attend to the demands of work, school, and home life.”

The leader of the team of highly-trained therapists, Tommy McGee, LMHC, CAP, QS, says, “One of the struggles that mental health patients often experience is finding good continuing care after leaving a residential or stabilization program. We are grateful our new Mental Health IOP will be available to everyone, including Hanley Center patients who leave our mental health residential program, so they can continue with a team with whom they feel safe and have grown to trust.”

Cutting-Edge Technologies at Hanley Center Counseling

Patients in our mental health IOP will learn vital coping skills to handle work-related stress, financial strain, grief and loss, chronic health conditions and new medical diagnoses, and the demands of parental, family, and social relationships. To support their efforts, we employ a range of cutting-edge technologies: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), Brainspotting, Expressive Arts Therapy, and Psychodrama, alongside traditional therapies, including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). These therapies are designed for use with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, and co-occurring substance use disorders, although substance use is not part of the eligibility requirements at our new IOP.
