Body, Mind, and Soul

Apr 20, 2021

Hanley Center Alumnus Shauna V.

As I lived in the women’s unit, process groups, individual counseling, and family counseling helped me address emotional and relationship issues while surrounded by a group of women who were exactly like me. The vulnerability, sharing, and intimacy of the women in my unit helped me identify and process my feelings and strengthen my relationship skills. Daily process groups provided both education and insight into why I responded to things a certain way and gave me the tools to respond differently.

There is no doubt in my mind that I am a “real alcoholic,” as described in the Big Book.

I suffer from the fatal and progressive disease of alcoholism. My only hope to recover from a hopeless state of mind and body is to seek, find, and live a spiritual solution. Through a thorough study of the program of Alcoholics Anonymous, the 12-Steps, and learning from the living miracles walking around, I knew that I, too, could recover.

Alcoholics Anonymous is available to anyone, anywhere.

I needed to be away from my everyday life to recognize and change behaviors that were causing additional friction. Hanley Center helped me set the right pathways for successful life at home and gave me the tools I needed to live life sober – as a woman, mother, wife, and employee.

It hasn’t always been easy, and I have hit a few big bumps and lost my way. However, I was not willing to give up. When I needed help, the staff welcomed me back with love and no judgment, pushed me harder, challenged me to dig deeper until finally, I found what it meant to surrender.

Today, I am not just compliant, but I have truly surrendered. I do the work, I trust in my Higher Power, and I have recovered from a hopeless state of mind and body.

I will never be cured of alcoholism.

I know that by doing the spiritual work and living the 12-Steps, complemented by therapy and psychiatric support for other issues, I absolutely can and do live a sober, happy, joy-filled life.

I can unequivocally say with every fiber of my being that I would not be where I am today without the Hanley Center. I am sober, happy, and joyful. I’m in good relationships, and the obsession with alcohol is gone. Without a doubt, Hanley Center aided me in healing my body, mind, and soul.
