Individuals with the disease of addiction often have co-occurring personality disorders. The presence of these co-occurring personality disorders can make treatment for substance use more challenging. Successfully overcoming addiction and avoiding relapse means confirming and dealing with a personality disorder diagnosis first.

We understand that not everyone with a personality disorder also has a substance use disorder. That’s why our Residential Mental Health Program features a dedicated space separate from the rest of Hanley Center. Our program has its own 24/7 nursing and medical care unit to enhance your privacy and confidentiality. As you recover from a personality disorder, you’ll have access to massage facilities, acupuncture, physical therapies, a walking trail, a tranquil healing garden, and a pool on the main Hanley Center campus.

Recognizing Personality Disorders

Understanding personality disorders as mental health conditions is key to treatment. They can range in intensity from severe to mild. The extra difficulty arises as many people with personality disorders don’t recognize that their thoughts and feelings feel normal.

Most experts agree that childhood experiences and genetics are factors, although a single cause of personality disorders is difficult to pinpoint. Since the brain is constantly changing during childhood as it grows, the widely accepted theory is that specific experiences trigger chemical reactions in the brain that may lead to such disorders.

Categorization of Personality Disorders and Treatment

At our personality disorder treatment centers, we provide individualized treatment modalities for cluster A, B, and C personality disorders, including:

Cluster A

Characterized by odd, eccentric thinking or behavior.

  • Paranoid Personality Disorder Treatment
A condition in which a person has a long-term pattern of distrust and suspicion of others. Treatments may include individualized talk therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
  • Schizoid Personality Disorder Treatment
A condition in which a person avoids social activities and interactions with others. Treatments may include individualized talk therapy focused on modifying negative thoughts, behaviors, and emotional responses associated with psychological distress.
  • Schizotypal Personality Disorder Treatment
A condition marked by a consistent pattern of intense discomfort with social relationships and interactions. Treatments may include individual and group CBT as well as medicinal therapies.

Cluster B

Characterized by dramatic, overly emotional, or unpredictable thinking or behavior.

  • Histrionic Personality Disorder Treatment
A condition characterized by a pattern of attention-seeking behaviors and a theatrical level of emotional reactions. Treatments often include long-term psychotherapy.
  • Narcissistic Personality Disorder Treatment
A condition in which people have an unreasonably high sense of self-importance. Treatments often include CBT, DBT, family therapy, and group therapy.
  • Antisocial Personality Disorder Treatment
Also known as sociopathy, this condition is marked by a disregard for others. They are prone to impulsivity, lying, and acting with little regard for safety. Treatments may include individual, group, and family therapies.
  • Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment
A condition that negatively impacts a person’s ability to manage their emotions, often resulting in unstable moods, behaviors, and relationships. Common treatments include CBT, DBT, anger management, and family therapies.

Cluster C

Characterized by anxious, fearful thinking or behavior.

  • Avoidant Personality Disorder Treatment
A disorder characterized by social discomfort and avoidance of interpersonal contact. Treatments typically include individual CBT and desensitization techniques.
  • Dependent Personality Disorder Treatment
One of the most diagnosed personality disorders, DPD, is characterized by feelings of helplessness, submissiveness, and a constant need to be taken care of. The best treatment therapy is CBT, as it challenges negative thinking patterns and encourages independent activities.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder Treatment
A condition marked by a preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control, which often interferes with task completion. Treatments include CBT.

Individualized Personality Disorder Treatment

Every category and type of personality disorder requires a unique method of treatment specific to its characteristics. Additionally, each person responds in their own way, so physicians and clinicians must adapt to each patient’s needs.

The Hanley treatment team understands this and is ready to help you achieve a proper diagnosis.

  • Physical exam:Our Hanley Center medical team will conduct a thorough and complete physical exam that includes a series of in-depth questions about your symptoms, lab tests, and other screenings.
  • Psychiatric evaluation: Our Center for Brain Recovery team will discuss your thoughts, feelings, and behavior with you and may include diagnostic testing. They will work alongside you to evaluate and help you design a plan for healing thoroughly.
  • Treatment planning:Together, our therapists, psychologists, doctors, and nurses will tailor an individualized personality disorder treatment plan specific to your diagnosis.
