Healing the Family System at Hanley Center

Jul 24, 2020

Like any chronic illness, addiction is a disease that affects all family members.

As with any devastating disease, family participants may have the opportunity to choose to either support the illness or focus on supporting recovery from it. Although you didn’t cause the disease, you cannot fix it alone. When it comes to the medical challenges and co-occurring disorders that accompany addiction for men and women, particularly the older adults, Hanley Center has a plan for families rooted in decades of experience.

What makes Hanley Center’s Intensive Family Program so unique and valuable?

Our five-day intensive immersion in family recovery empowers you to understand and identify the dynamics within your family’s system that may unknowingly contribute to your ongoing addiction. Our confidential, supportive environment helps each of you recognize the personal effects your loved one’s substance use has had on your emotional and physical wellbeing. Through this valuable education, you and your family members will discover new, healthier coping strategies for lifelong recovery. We also offer you the opportunity to ask questions and speak with your loved ones in an open, judgment-free atmosphere.

Our age-specific treatment focus on both patients and family members is key.

Every family experiences events and that must be navigated as a team. A loved one’s addiction is no exception. Just as no single method is fully effective in treating substance use or mental health disorders in every person, neither does one type of therapeutic approach work for every family’s recovery.

Quality care for the entire family must take each family’s specific challenges into account and offer a variety of age-specific solutions. These may include co-occurring mental health or medical challenges such as diabetes, cardiac issues, or cancers that are common with older adults. Regardless of the patient’s history, Hanley Center recognizes that family members with an addicted loved one often experience:

  • Interruptions in family communication
  • Financial hardships
  • Sleepless nights
  • Constant emotional turmoil
  • Secret-keeping behaviors
  • Hypervigilance and unhealthy caretaking tendencies
  • Emotional and/or physical abuse

These choices include developing the proper boundaries, learning to communicate constructively, and creating space for self-care techniques–not just for the person with a substance use disorder. Quality treatment takes the time to guide each member of the family in developing a plan that works for everyone. In this type of supportive environment, recovery – and so much more – is possible.

Hanley Center offers age-specific recovery options for the whole family.

We care for all of you. Our family offerings are based on our comprehensive addiction treatment model and include wraparound support for the families of men, women, and older adults seeking recovery, including our signature offering of weekly conjoint family sessions with your patient’s Primary Therapist. In addition, our family program includes:

  • Ongoing contact with clinical therapists and the entire treatment team
  • Communication with your loved one through treatment
  • Guidance on self-care techniques
  • Open discussions facilitated in a safe and supportive environment
  • Guided group sessions
  • Strategies to help you cope with the challenges of addiction recovery

You deserve individualized recovery planning, too.

When the family system participates in continuing care planning outcomes improve. We collaborate with families to develop a robust continuing care plan for the next steps in the addicted person’s recovery and also guide each family member to establish a personal recovery plan. Components of your recovery plan may include:

  • Support groups
  • Individual therapies
  • Family case management
