What Makes Hanley’s Older Adult Program Different?

Mar 10, 2023

With drug use among adults ages 65 and older on the rise, the number of older adults needing treatment has increased over the last two decades. It’s projected to continue to rise throughout the remainder of the 2020s. As pioneers in treatment for seniors, Hanley Center’s Older Adult Recovery program is equipped to help people of retirement age face and overcome their substance use issues. Let’s introduce what makes our mission to help your older loved one start treatment and stay in recovery, unlike other treatment centers.

Research shows an increase in drug use among retirement-age adults that are projected to continue through the decade. As the need for age-appropriate treatment increases, the pioneers of older adult recovery at Hanley Center are equipped to help seniors develop coping skills to live a happy and healthy life free from the harm of alcohol or drugs. Unlike a typical facility with a multi-generational population, Hanley’s program is designed with the specific needs of seniors in mind, covering physical, mental, and emotional needs commonly related to aging. We offer superior medical care for physical and mental health issues and are able to treat senior patients with medically complex histories and conditions. In addition, our close proximity to a renowned medical center allows us to provide swift critical care in case of emergency.

Hanley Center specializes in treating those who are 60 years or older.

Our Older Adult Recovery program only serves men and women of a specific age group. We understand the unique circumstances of people close to or beyond retirement age. The factors for substance use may be long-term, dating back decades, or they may have emerged more recently and related to loss of independence, a chronic health condition, loss of mobility, financial dependence on adult children, or some other variable. We recognize how a senior’s quality of life gets diminished by substance use and how drug use can rob them of precious time left with friends and family members.

Hanley Center’s Older Adult Recovery program pioneered this form of treatment.

The treatment program for adults over 60 was the first of its kind when it opened in the late 1990s. More than a third of a century later, it’s the longest-running program for senior recovery in the U.S. The decades of experience behind us inform the ways we tailor our programming and approach to meet the unique needs of older adults.

Hanley Center provides treatment for substance use and mental health.

Hanley Center’s Center for Older Adult Recovery program offers dual diagnosis treatment for seniors living with a drinking or drug problem and a co-occurring mental health disorder. We treat multiple issues simultaneously by providing integrated care through our team of experts in psychiatry, medicine, nursing, counseling, case management, and aftercare services.

Hanley Center is experienced in handling other health issues, too.

Older adults with substance use issues are more likely to have other health problems like diabetes, heart disease, and dementia. We offer on-site water and physical therapy. Chronic pain management is another common issue among people in the Older Adult Recovery program. Their misuse of prescription meds, for example, may be the reason they sought treatment help, so their sober goals here will include learning to manage pain through other means. Specialty healthcare access is also available next door to Hanley Center at St. Mary’s Medical Center. St. Mary’s provides a complete range of medical specialties, including critical care and cardiology.

The Older Adult Recovery program places a high value on peer support.

Group therapy in our Older Adult program allows our patients to feel a human connection, share experiences, and polish their interpersonal skills. At Hanley Center, we strive to create a close-knit community of peers, so our patients feel safe, welcomed, and comfortable. Our age-specific program allows older adults to interact with people from similar generational viewpoints who can best relate to priorities and views on life.

The Older Adult Recovery program empowers whole families.

As a substance use disorder affects a spouse and children (even grown ones), treatment for a whole family is imperative for a person’s recovery. Our Five Day Family Program helps a person’s loved ones have open discussions in a safe space where communication is guided and therapeutic. Each person affected by a family member’s substance use gets an opportunity to contribute to conversations about healing as the group learns new skills to deal with the daily challenges that recovery can present.

Our outcome data shows us that 84% of older adults say their most meaningful relationships are better after treatment.

Hanley Center sets up an older adult for future success before completing a program.

Our goal is to help your loved one return to their community safely and sustain sobriety long-term. As your loved one receives treatment, we’re guiding them toward the next steps of their journey in recovery. We can help them determine which forms of continuing care will best serve them, from Intensive Outpatient Programs to group counseling.

Our outcome data shows that 73% of adults over 55 follow a continuing care plan following treatment at Hanley Center, and 75% of older adults report being in better health.

Our program is designed to help seniors stay active and motivated.

Hanley Center’s Older Adult Recovery program is designed to help your loved one connect with peers, remain engaged throughout their stay, and feel better by exercising. They can enjoy a walking trail, a jogging path, and a pool for either fitness swimming or aqua therapy. Eating healthy meals several times a day and being exposed to nutritional counseling can also enhance their quality of life and motivate them to improve their wellness.
